Rhythmic gymnastics is a group sport combining gymnastics performed to music with various apparatus, including ribbons, balls, hoops, ropes, and clubs. Emphasis is placed on improving flexibility, coordination, and having fun.
Rhythmic gymnastics began in Scandinavia in the 19th century when two schools of thought about gymnastics were combined. Originally developed to provide an overall physical fitness program for girls and women of all ages, rhythmic gymnastics evolved primarily during the 1950s. The sport was first recognized by the FIG (the international governing body of gymnastic sports) in 1962, and the first championships were held in Budapest, Hungary, in 1963.
